Not too
many decades ago, it was possible to look down once-narrow roadways along
Fort Lauderdale Beach or inland along main drag U.S. 1 to gaze upon flat,
wide-open expanses almost as far as the eye could see, dotted only by palms
and a few motels.
Now Greater Fort Lauderdale, with its downtown skyscrapers and luxury
accommodations, constitutes one community blending into another, with
some towns grown into cities, and others becoming unofficial suburbs, and
all of Broward County becoming one sprawling metropolitan playground
stretching from the Atlantic shoreline west to the Everglades and from the
southern Palm Beaches to Miami's northern fringes.
Continuing unabated, enormous, rapid growth, marked by the steady arrival of
young, old, and in-between, representing assorted cultures and lifestyles
makes Greater Fort Lauderdale one of the state’s, and possibly the nation’s,
most vibrant, diverse regions.
Yet despite all this growth, Greater Fort Lauderdale’s some 30 communities
zealously guard their separate identities, histories, and often one-of-a-kind
attractions that make each one a special place in the sun.
